Brit-based France fans take to streets of London to celebrate World Cup win – and give us a taste of what could have been

THOUSANDS of France fans partied in Piccadilly Circus after their national side lifted the World Cup having beaten Croatia in a thrilling final.

Jubilant supporters flooded the iconic central London location, flying the Tricolour and setting off flares as they celebrated a 4-2 victory in Russia.

Fans climbed the Eros statue in high spirits after the country became the world champions for the second time in their history.

At one point a large swathe of the area was closed entirely to traffic as the crowd of celebrating fans swelled.

Fans were heard chanting “Allez Les Bleus” (“Go the Blues”).

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Craziness in Piccadilly Circus. Champions du monde.”

Another wrote: “First France wins, then they take Piccadilly Circus.”

A third said: “Piccadilly Circus goes mad for Les Blues.”

It is estimated there are around 400,000 French citizens living in London, making it France’s sixth biggest city.

Similar celebrations took place all around France with thousands gathering at the Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars to watch their nation in action on the big screen.

Large crowds also gathered in Marseille, Lyon and Lille.

France’s players will hold a homecoming parade early next week with thousands of fans again expected to be in attendance.
